Purpose
The Lincoln University Sonia Kovalevsky Math for Girls Day exists solely to encourage young women in grades eight through twelve to continue their study of mathematics and to assist teachers of female students by providing a one-day Spring event. Sonia Kovalevsky days have been organized by the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) and institutions around the country since 1985, when AWM sponsored a symposium on Sonia Kovalevsky, the first woman to receive a Ph.D in mathematics. These celebrations consist of a program of workshops, talks, and problem solving competitions for female students and their teachers, both women and men.
