Purpose
The Lincoln University Sonia Kovalevsky Math for Girls Day exits solely to encourage young women in grades eight through twelve to continue their study of mathematics and to assist teachers of mathematics female students providing a one-day Spring event. Sonia Kovalevsky days have been organized by the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) and institutions around the country since 1985, when AWM sponsored a symposium on Sonia Kovalevsky, the first woman to receive a Ph.D in mathematics. These celebrations consist of a program of workshops, talks, and problem solving competitions for high school female students and their teachers, both women and men.

2007 Report and Program Evaluation
Sonia Kovalevsky Math for Girls Day 2007 Report
The Second Annual Lincoln University Sonia Kovalevsky Math for Girls Day was held April 20th, 2007 from 8:00am to 2:00pm on the campus of Lincoln University in Jefferson City, MO. Prior to the event, Lincoln University created a web page where parents & teachers could register and gather information regarding the day’s events. Teachers/Parents registered online, printed their registration forms, and then faxed or emailed them to the Coordinator, Mrs. Donna
Stallings. Registration ended on April 2,2007 with 114 students and 12 parents/teachers registered from:
After a registration was received, copies of Media Release forms were emailed to teachers/parents. Each school was asked to bring those forms signed on the day of the event. This became somewhat of an area of concern as some parents did not want their child’s pictures to be displayed on the internet. I assured parents/teachers that pictures would not be used in any other way other than brochures and presentations. Parents were satisfied with the agreement to allow pictures for those reasons only. Our initial goal was to register 100 young ladies and their teachers and we were excited that we met and exceeded that goal long before April 20th. We had three schools (Thomas Jefferson Middle- Jefferson City, MO, Francis Howell North- St. Louis, MO, and Helias High*(wanted to increase attendees) – Jefferson City, MO) who contacted us after the end of registration. We were unable to accommodate them due to a limited funding. I encouraged them to register early next year since attendance was on a first come first served basis. * The last two years, we have placed no limitations on the number of students a school could bring. If the program continues, we plan on making that change and only allowing 20 people from each school. This will allow us to encourage variety and networking amongst teachers and students. On the day of the event, 96 young ladies arrived along with their teachers and parents. 100% of the students completed surveys and provided comments throughout the day that will help us in planning for future Math Days.

Mrs. Donna Stallings, Program Coordinator along with LU President, Dr. Carolyn Mahoney, and LU Math Department Head, Dr. Ruthi Sturdevant provided a welcome to kick off the day. In honor of the families who lost loved ones during the Virginia Tech tragedy a moment of silence was taken prior to beginning the event. Students were registered and teamed up for the Math Team Competition and late morning workshops. Prior to beginning the event students were entertained with music and audio PSA’s provided by the AdCouncil and Naa’nac Productions. Included within this report is a copy of that “LUSK Math for Girls Day” CD. Each participant received a beautiful pink Math for Girls Day T-shirt that was worn throughout the day. During the continental breakfast, students were provided with opportunities to speak with representatives from Ameren UE – local nuclear engineering company, NSA, Missouri Department of Transportation, Girls Scouts Heart of Missouri Council, Missouri Department of Conservation, and the Lincoln University Admissions Office.
Ms. Brenda Grosinsky, Environmental Protection Agency of Kansas City helped to start the day with a brief talk about opportunities within the EPA for students who excelled in mathematics. Ms. Grosinsky introduced two young ladies, one of which was an LU alum. Ms. Gloria Washington, now working on her Doctorate in Computer Science at George Washington University and Ms. Wale Adeniji. Both young ladies spoke to students about the paths they took as they entered the workforce. Currently, Ms. Adeniji works for EPA –KC and Ms. Washington for NSA. Students were divided into teams prior to arriving. (Grades 10 – 12 High School Level, Grade 8 & 9 Middle School Level) While students participated in the team competition, teachers/parents attended a workshop on Knot Theory. The session included hands on activities to help parents/teachers help their students look for patterns and develop critical thinking. During the teacher/parent workshop participants were provided with give-away bags with materials from NASA, Missouri Department of Conservation, and NSA about math programs/websites that offered valuable information about programs for their students. Presenters also gave out prizes for those who answered questions about Sonia Kovalevsky and their seminar. After the Team Competition students had the opportunity to choose from ten different seminars. Each seminar was limited to 18 students to allow speakers to provide more individual attention and hands on activities.
